Stand Off
When Keisha and I arrived home, I was immediately greeted by my parents. From the solemn look on both of their faces, I knew they weren't pleased with me. I didn't want to go to war with them, but I also had no intention of being bullied either.
"Where have you been?" were the first words out of my dad's mouth.
"It's nice to see you too, Daddy," I said coyly.
My dad stared at me intently while I walked towards the kitchen as if nothing was wrong. I could hear their footsteps following me to my destination.
"Where have you been?" my dad asked once again, this time with extra bass in his voice.
If he was trying to get my full attention, he had it. With my hand on the refrigerator handle, I stopped and made eye contact with him, and then my mother. Keisha was lingering in the back, trying to stay out the line of fire. I took a deep breath before answering.
"I went to the mall with Keisha."
I noticed my mother rolling her eyes as she crossed her arms. That was a clear indication that she knew there was a part two that I was leaving out. I was debating in my head just how much they knew or whether I was just being paranoid.
The next thing I peeped was Keisha completely missing from the scene. She knew that the next question from my dad was going to be directed at her. As expected, he turned around in search of my cousin, who was now ghost. "Where's Keisha? Maybe she can tell me where you all have been."
"Daddy, I just told you," I responded innocently.
"So, you haven't been with Dalvin?" he asked point blank, deciding to stop with the guessing games.
I started biting down on my bottom lip, knowing that it was about to be on. One thing I knew about my dad, he had a lawyer's approach when it came to questions; never ask one unless you already know the answer. With that in mind, I began mentally preparing myself for the showdown.
"Yes, I was with Dalvin today."
My mother's eyes got big as I admitted the truth. I guess she thought that I would lie to the bitter end, but I decided against continuing the deceit after meeting with Dalvin's parents. I think my dad was also shocked that he didn't have to drag the truth out of me, because he stood there speechless, as if he didn't hear what I said.
"I forbade you to see him again. How could you go against my wishes?"
"What, you think I can turn off my feelings for Dalvin just like that? You don't understand. I love him."
"More than you love your family?"
"This isn't about choosing between my family and Dalvin. His parents accept me, why can't you accept him?" I don't know if it was because of all the heat in the kitchen, but I would've sworn I saw smoke coming from dad's head.
"When did you meet his parents?" My mother asked the question that my dad couldn't seem to.
